James Tavernier penalty rescues Rangers as Aberdeen denied victory at the death after VAR steps in – 3 talking points

A last-gasp James Tavernier penalty rescued Rangers as they salvaged a point in a pulsating 1-1 Pittodrie draw to preserve Philippe Clement's unbeaten record but they missed the chance to take full advantage of Celtic's slip up 24 hours earlier.

Aberdeen looked set to bounce back from their hammering at Parkhead thanks to Bojan Miovski's early goal but Tavernier levelled in injury time after referee Nick Walsh awarded a spot kick for a shirt pull by Stefan Gartenmann on Connor Goldson, following VAR intervention. The Light Blues, though, still squandered their big chance to cut the gap at the top to six points with a game in hand as they after the draw.

But for Aberdeen the result helps make up for their 6-0 defeat to the other half of the Old Firm before the international break and they started with real purpose. Ester Sokler had a glorious early chance to reward Barry Robson for handing him his first start of the season when he was put clean through on goal but the Slovenian squandered his opportunity a Jack Butland came up with a huge save with his foot to deny the striker. Butland’s opposite number Kelle Roos then denied Tom Lawrence at the other end after a brilliantly worked move from the visitors.

But it was the home side who grabbed the lead to send Pittodrie wild after just 10 minutes and it was a simple move. Roos sent a long ball upfield which was flicked into Miovski’s path by Sokler and the Macedonian marksman made no mistake as he fired past Butland.

Roos was in inspired form between the sticks for the Dons as he denied Danilo from close range before a double save from Leon Balogun and John Lundstram headers in quick succession. Rangers were better after the restart and Lawrence and Balogun both struck
