James Tavernier fears Rangers scolding from John Greig if he doesn't lift Europa League trophy

James Tavernier admits he’ll be too scared to speak to Rangers legend John Greig should he fail to get his hands on the Europa League trophy on Wednesday night.

Tavernier and his teammates jetted out to their date with destiny in Seville on Monday afternoon, with club legend Greig also on board as a VIP guest for the showdown with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Englishman hopes to follow Barca Bears skipper Greig into the history books by becoming only the second man in history to lift a European title as Rangers captain.

And when asked if he’s had a word of advice from the man voted the greatest ever Rangers player, Tavernier revealed why he’s been putting the conversation off.

He smiled: “I think the only time I can really speak to him is if I lift that trophy up. If I don’t then he’s going to give me some stick!

“My aim is to lift that Europa League trophy. That sort of levels the playing field a little bit.

“I have little moments with John, but winning this puts yourself in a category with most of the greats of the club - and that’s where we all want to be.

“You want to put a legacy down for when the day comes when you do retire. You want to be able to look back and be really proud of it.”
