James Sands should keep Rangers out of his mouth after exit dig as American hit with 'medals weighing him down' jibe

Barry Ferguson is far from a fan of James Sands' pop over his time at Rangers - as his fellow pundit spotted the right time to land a trophy dig.

The former captain and Record Sport columnist has read the comments from the New York city midfielder, who left Ibrox earlier this year after over 18 months in Glasgow. He claimed that he looks forward to certain challenges in the MLS 'that I didn't get at all really in Scotland in the league there' and Ferguson reckons it might be somewhat rich coming from a player who eventually fell out the picture under Michael Beale.

And he tells Go Radio that comments like that should not be aired and it leaves a bad taste. Ferguson said "I don't like people saying things like that. I always stick up for the Scottish game and I know the quality is not the best at times but I don't think James Sands covered himself in glory.

"I don't think he was a main player for Rangers when he came over. He did well when he came over, a midfielder having to play centre-back at times, and did a job.

"But I don't like seeing that when players leave, it's a bit of bad blood for me and you should just say things happen in football. When I see players who leave clubs and have a wee pop at them, I don't really like it."

Celtic hero Peter Grant was also on the punditry panel and took the tongue in-cheek approach to the comments by Sands, who won one Scottish Cup in his Rangers stint: "It must be all those winners medals weighing him down.

"Disappointed as we were praise worthy of certain games in Europe that he played. But I am always very much against that."
