Rangers should shake hands with disinterested Morelos and Kent and send them packing – Barry Ferguson

They've been tremendous players for Rangers but there’s no doubt now it’s time to shake hands with Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, thank them for their service and send them on their way.

Michael Beale has as good as confirmed the duo are leaving when their contracts expire in a month’s time. And following Sunday’s season-killer at Hampden, there’s no point them hanging about any longer. As Beale admitted after that bitterly disappointing defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup semis, there’s a huge rebuild required at Ibrox and the manager has to decide just who is worth keeping on.

With five games left, it’s now time to give some of those fringe players and youngsters the chance they’ve been waiting for. Guys like Rabbi Matondo, Ridvan Yilmaz, Alex Lowry and Robby McCrorie have barely been seen this year. These post-split matches will all be tough affairs but with second place wrapped up, maybe Beale should be thinking about throwing them in.

Don’t get me wrong, he won’t want the season to end on any more of a whimper that it’s going to but these guys should be champing at the bit to get a chance. They certainly can’t show any less enthusiasm for the task than was on show from Morelos and Kent on Sunday.

I couldn’t believe how disinterested the pair looked. We’re talking two guys who have been central to everything Rangers have achieved these last couple of years but they’re a far cry from that now. They’ll soon be former Rangers players and it’s now time to start thinking about the future. Beale says there could be as many as 12 new recruits coming in and that seems a fair number to me. But they all have to be guys who can start – we don’t need squad fillers.
