James Garner names Manchester United teammate he admires and confirms future intentions

James Garner has underlined his desire to succeed at Manchester United, despite rumours he could yet head out on loan again next season.

The midfielder had a stellar year out on loan at Nottingham Forest last campaign, helping them to promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. He has been included in Erik ten Hag’s pre-season tour squad with eyes on a United first-team place next campaign.

Ten Hag is eager to bring in a new midfielder but Garner will be determined to show he is capable of being a senior regular. He had been linked with a return to Forest but Dean Henderson’s loan spell has ruled this out under Premier League transfer rules. Either way, he’s revealed his intention to stay on at Old Trafford long-term.

Speaking to club media, he said: “Of course, I want to be a United player. I think, even if you don't play for United, I feel it is most people's dream.

“That is obviously my aim this season and I’ve got to have a good pre-season and hopefully that happens.” When asked about his future ambitions, he said: “Probably the exact same answer: to be a United player.

“Ever since I was a little boy, I've grown as a player and a man, [and] I feel like my whole life has been in Manchester. I’ve lived in Manchester all this time, so it's definitely something that I want to carry on with.”

Garner added that he admires a number of the first-team squad at United, and namechecked Bruno Fernandes. He said: “I'd say I admire them and the quality that they have like Bruno and the lads that are in there now.

“They’ve got a lot of quality and they’ve played in a lot of big games.”
