James Forrest a serial Celtic trophy collector as he blushes at suggestion he's in line for a STATUE

James Forrest is out to emulate Celtic’s greatest trophy winning legend – but he does’t reckon he’ll end up on a plinth in Prestwick.

The Hoops star got his hands on an incredible 23rd winners medal at the weekend when he was presented with the Premiership prize and he’s after another gong in this weekend’s Old Firm Scottish Cup showdown. Forrest is now level with the legendary Billy McNeill in terms of silverware and just two behind the most decorated Celt in history Bobby Lennox.

The Lisbon Lion hero is one of Saltcoats’ most famous sons and has a bronze statue on Countess Street in his home town. Forrest is the most famous thing to come out of Prestwick since Elvis touched down at the airport. But he’s not expecting the Lennox bronze treatment if he kicks on and claims a record number of medals.

Humble Forrest even chuckled at the suggestion, and said: “I am not sure about that! I think my family would laugh at that one if I told them it was happening.

“I don’t think that will happen down there. That (record) is an incentive for me but winning another trophy for Celtic is the only incentive I need.

“It’s been an unbelievable period and I don’t take any of them for granted. It’s just good to a feel part of them again but when you hear those milestones, it is incredible.

“When I get older, I think I will appreciate it even more. I have always appreciated being here and I have always loved it. There will be a time, if I did retire or whatever happens, that I’ll look back. When you’re a bit older you get more emotional about it because you know that in a few years’ time, whenever you retire, that’s it done. But Celtic will always be a part of me and it’s great to look back on so many highs and positives.”
