Jadon Sancho scores first goal since Manchester United exit days after private meeting with boss

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has scored his first goal since he went back to Borussia Dortmund as he helped his team win 2-1 against Werder Bremen.

Sancho added his team's second of the game just before former United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was sent off. Despite the hosts pulling a goal back in the second half, Dortmund held on for the three points.

The 23-year-old used was a star in the Bundesliga before United spent £73m to bring him to Old Trafford. But he struggled to settle with the Reds and this season ran into trouble with the manager, Erik ten Hag.

It was thought going back to Germany might help Sancho play better. He started off well with an assist in his first game but after that, he struggled to make too much of an impact.

Dortmund's coach, Edin Terzic, has given Sancho a vote of confidence. He said: "We were working in training all week on him getting into situations where he can gain confidence. It showed what he is capable of, and hopefully, he can continue like this."

Earlier this week, Terzic mentioned that Sancho had expressed in a private meeting his desire to play more in the middle of the pitch as a No 10, but he faces tough competition. He explained: "[Sancho] said very confidently that his favourite number is ten. We know that it can be used very flexibly. But Julian Brandt and Marco Reus did really well on the ten."

Sancho's limited game time is seen as one reason for his dip in form. Before being left out by Ten Hag, he only played four times for United and was having trouble making a strong impact, even though the club tried to support him.
