'It was f****** embarrassing' - Manchester United sparked Alan Shearer anger after beating Newcastle

For Manchester United it was job done, onto the next.

The Wembley win in the 1999 FA Cup final was reasonably routine as Newcastle United were brushed aside 2-0. The Reds had won the Premier League a matter of days before and would go on to complete a historic treble against Bayern Munich in the Champions League later the same month.

It meant the FA Cup success simply got put to one side as attention shifted to Europe. Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham were on target against the Magpies, who were beaten in the final for the second year on the bounce.

Yet such was the appetite for a trophy in Newcastle, which stood at 30 years at the time and has been extended to 53 since, the beaten finalists returned home to fans lining the streets to welcome back their heroes. There was an open-top bus parade through the city, the second in two years after the club also held one following defeat to Arsenal in the 1998 FA Cup final.

And while United went on to make history and return to a heroes welcome with three trophies to show off, Newcastle were left thanking fans with nothing to show for their efforts.
