'He's been great for us' - Manchester United hoping for more FA Youth Cup glory with Phil Jones' help

Sir Alex Ferguson once said 'give youngsters a chance and they seldom let you down'.

Manchester United have a rich history of developing players and the importance of the FA Youth Cup is no secret.

The Busby Babes and Class of '92 won the competition and the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo and Dan Gore were the latest youngsters to write their names into history when lifting the trophy last year.

United ended their over-a-decade wait for the FA Youth Cup when they won the competition in the 2021/22 season and the final against Nottingham Forest was a special occasion at Old Trafford.

Over 67,000 supporters watched the youngsters win 3-1 against Forest and that was an attendance record for the Youth Cup, which helped create an unforgettable night.

Garnacho was the poster boy of the campaign due to his goals, but Mainoo and Gore were exceptional in midfield and all three of those players now train with the first-team.

The Youth Cup has been a springboard for many young players' careers and United will begin this season's campaign in the competition against Derby County on Tuesday.

Adam Lawrence took charge of United's Under-18s in the summer and he told the Manchester Evening News: "I think everyone's aware of the connection at the club with the FA Youth Cup, not only the titles won but also the players that have represented the club in the competition.

"I think that's a special thing when you look at the names through the years and players that have taken part in this competition. That's the bit the spirit of the club that's like really important to the players.
