“It was definitely a surprise” – West Brom fan pundit gives his verdict on recent player agreement

Since coming up from the academy, Alex Palmer has predominantly been a back-up goalkeeper at West Brom.

This season he hasn’t made any league appearances which made it somewhat surprising to see a new four-year deal handed to the player, especially as other back-up goalkeeper David Button also signed a new deal too.

Button made ten appearances this season showing he was slightly more in favour than Palmer this year.

With that in mind, we asked FLW’s West Brom fan pundit Matt his thoughts on the new contract and whether he would like to see him as the club’s number one next season: “I think it was definitely a surprise to see Alex Palmer extend his contract. A four year deal suggests that Albion definitely can forsee him becoming the number one goalkeeper, something which you might not have expected when David Button earlier in the day extended his deal at the Hawthorns so it was a surprise.

“However, if you’re asking me who I’d rather see as Albion’s number one goalkeeper next season, it would be Palmer. I think you’ve really got to reward your academy graduates for fulfilling everything they’ve been asked to do.

“Palmer went out on loan to Plymouth in League Two at one point and won promotion there. He was successful at Lincoln in League One last season, almost winning promotion there and even went out on an emergency loan to Luton this year, and did fairly well so I think it’s natural that he takes the next step into becoming a Championship goalkeeper and I think I’d rather see faith being put in the
