'It was chaotic': Police swarm scene as teenage boys rushed to hospital after being hit by tram

Two teenage boys were rushed to hospital after being hit by a tram in Wythenshawe on Tuesday night (April 25).

Witnesses described 'chaotic' scenes as emergency services swarmed the area, cordoning off the tram lines beside the Baguley Metrolink stop, beside Southmoor Road.

Police raced to the scene of the collision shortly after 8.30pm, where it was established two teenage boys, who were riding on a bike, had been involved in a collision with the tram, which was heading towards Manchester city centre.

One witness reported seeing at least ten emergency service vehicles in attendance, with two ambulances at the scene, along with paramedics. A stretcher was seen being used on the tracks by emergency crews.

Passengers on board also had to leave the carriage as the area was blocked off.

“It looked like a really bad incident as loads of emergency services were there with people getting off the tram. There were about ten service vehicles and two ambulances," they said.

Another, who was inside the JD Gym opposite at the time of the incident, said: "Someone said two boys were hit by a tram. I was just in the gym and then I suddenly saw a load of police and ambulances turn up on blue lights. It was chaotic.”

Officers remained stationed at both ends of the cordon, with pictures from the scene clearly showing the front of the tram had been damaged in the incident.

The two teenage boys involved were taken to hospital from the scene. Police said they did not appear to have sustained serious or life-threatening injuries.

The North West Ambulance Service and Transport for Greater Manchester have been approached for more details.
