'It’s surprising' - Sevilla manager takes fresh swipe at Manchester United after Europa League clash

Sevilla manager Jose Luis Mendilibar was 'surprised' at how easy it was to defeat Manchester United on Thursday night.

United arrived at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium with an aggregate score of 2-2 after throwing away the game in the first leg and the away leg represented an opportunity for the players to make amends for the draw at Old Trafford.

However, Sevilla took the lead in the seventh minute after calamitous defending from David de Gea and Harry Maguire. United ultimately never recovered from that setback and they looked second-best in every department across the pitch.

Sevilla made it 2-0 immediately after half-time and that goal meant Erik ten Hag's changes were made redundant. Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford were substituted on during the break, but they were helpless in stopping Sevilla.

The Spaniards scored a third goal with 10 minutes remaining to rub salt in the wounds and Mendilibar, speaking at his post-match press conference, said he was surprised at how 'easy' it was to knock United out of the Europa League.

"This is a team [United] that’s used to greater things," Mendilibar said "We came from an awkward situation in Manchester, where we drew 2-2 without doing things right, and people believed that we could do it. In the end we did it.

"It’s surprising for us to win a game against Manchester United without struggling and with such forcefulness, it’s not easy."

United return to action against Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.
