Ireland Under-21 game off after Gabon fail to travel

The Republic of Ireland's Under-21 friendly with Gabon has been called off after their opponents opted not to travel to play the game.

Ireland were due to play the African side on Tuesday in Austria as part of three friendly games, with matches with Ukraine (Friday) and Kuwait (Monday 19 June) to follow.

The FAI confirmed this morning there will now be just two matches as part of the camp.

They said: "The organisers of Ireland U21s’ friendly against Gabon, due to take place on Tuesday in Austria, informed the FAI this morning the fixture is off after Gabon elected not to travel."

"This is outside of our control and Ireland will now continue preparations for Ukraine and Kuwait."

Millwall’s Aidomo Emakhu and Burnley’s Dara Costelloe have been called into the squad after the withdrawal of Shamrock Rovers’ Johnny Kenny and Celtic’s Rocco Vata . Kenny was ruled out with injury earlier this week while Vata will miss the trip due to family reasons.

Republic of Ireland Under-21s international friendly fixtures:

Friday, 16 Jun | Ukraine U21 v Ireland U21, 5pm, Parktherme Arena, Bad Radkersburg, Austria

Monday, 19 June | Ireland U21 v Kuwait U22, 4pm, Union Sport-Club, Blumau, Austria
