'What's meant to be will be' - Leanne Kiernan keeping calm ahead of World Cup squad announcement

A philosophical Leanne Kiernan says she'll accept whatever news comes her way ahead of Vera Pauw's Republic of Ireland World Cup squad announcement.

Kiernan made her first start since February, 2022 [in the Pinatar Cup against Russia] when she lined out in the 3-2 win over Zambia at Tallaght Stadium on Thursday night.

The Liverpool striker was bright, if understandably a little rusty, in a disjointed first-half team performance, making way for Amber Barrett at half-time.

Kiernan has barely played in nine months - she suffered an ankle injury last September that effectively wiped out her season. She did get back for Liverpool's last two games and has been part of Pauw's extended panel since 12 June.

The Cavan 24-year-old now faces a nervy wait until the manager nails down her final 23-player squad for the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, which will be announced on Thursday.

"I just think what's meant to be will be and what's for you won't pass you," Kiernan reflected.

"Just chill and see what happens, I can't control it now so... Sure what can you do? It's out of your control. Relax and see what's to come.

"Listen, as a young kid I always wanted to represent my country and to represent it at a senior level and have a chance of going to the World Cup. It's a dream come true. It's a great group of girls and of course, we're very proud to wear the jersey."

Kiernan's injury woes have helped her to put things into perspective. It would be a remarkable achievement if she was to make it to Australia, considering the woeful luck she has endured.
