India head coach Igor Stimac was on Friday handed a two-match ban for his red-card offence after he argued with the match officials during the home side's 1-1 draw against Kuwait in their last group match of the SAFF Championships football in Bengaluru. Stimac was also fined USD 500 as the SAFF Disciplinary Committee deemed it a fit case for suspending him for more than one match. He was also handed a red card against Pakistan in India's campaign opener on June 21 but in that case the matter was not referred to the SAFF Disciplinary Committee as the offence was deemed "less serious" and he had to sit out of the subsequent match against Nepal on June 24.
The Indian Football team could only secure a 1-1 draw against Kuwait in SAFF Championship, with Anwar Ali's own goal cancelling skipper Sunil Chhetri's opener in the match. Anwar's mistake turned out to be a costly one as India could only secure one point from the match. However, Chhetri refused to criticise the defender for the own goal, saying it's the team that conceded the goal, not the player alone. With India's progression into the semi-finals already secured, Chhetri wasn't too concerned with the draw.
India and Kuwait drew 1-1 in the final Group A clash of the SAFF Championship 2023 on Tuesday at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. In what was a high-tempo and high-tempered contest from start to finish, Sunil Chhetri's 92nd international goal, a clinical volley put India ahead at the stroke of half-time. However, an unfortunate own goal from Anwar Ali in the second-half injury time put a heartbreaking and unfortunate end to India's hopes of topping the group.
Sunil Chhetri worked his magic but India had to split points with Kuwait after an acrimonious 1-1 draw in their last group match in the SAFF Championship on Tuesday. Chhetri had put India on the road to victory with an injury-time strike in the first half but an own goal by Anwar Ali in the added time of the second half spoiled the home side's march. This was also the first goal India conceded in nine matches. The result meant that India and Kuwait ended up on seven points but the latter topped Group A on better goal average. India will play Lebanon in the semifinal while Kuwait will take on either Bangladesh or Maldives. Already qualified for the semifinal, both India and Kuwait pressed forward from the whistle, giving some entertaining moments.

This was the second time in the 2023 edition of the SAFF Championship that Stimac was sent off from the ground. Earlier, he was shown a red card during a match against Pakistan. Tuesday's match against Kuwait ended in a 1-1 draw. Both teams are in the semi-finals but India finished second in the points table.

India and Nepal players were involved in a massive on-field spat during the SAFF Championship 2023 encounter in Bengaluru on Saturday. The incident took place in the 64th minute of the Group A match where Rahul Bheke and Bimal Gharti Magar got involved in an altercation. Both footballers went for a header and in the aftermath, Bheke charged at Magar and pushed him slightly. The incident prompted reactions from both sides as all the players got involved in the spat. The referee had to intervene and after some time, the situation was resolved and the match was resumed.
