Injury forces Munster duo Osborne and Wren to retire

Rowan Osborne and Jonathan Wren have been forced to retire due to injury, Munster have confirmed.

Scrum-half Osborne, who joined from Leinster last summer, suffered a concussion in October.

The 25-year-old Kildare man had made 11 appearances for Leinster and played in Munster's opening two games this season.

"Rowan has received specialist medical care since the concussion, and despite his best efforts and those of the medical team, along with lengthy discussions with those close to him, the decision to retire was made in the best interests of his long-term health," said the province.

Wren (above), an Ireland Under-20 Grand Slam winner in 2019, has also been forced to call time on his career due to a persistent hamstring injury.

The 23-year-old academy back-three player, who came up the ranks with Crosshaven RFC and PBC, made his Munster debut against Wasps in December 2021.

Munster said he was "retiring from the game on medical grounds despite battling back from a number of setbacks."

The club, who were knocked out of the Heineken Champions Cup and the URC at the quarter-final stages this season, had already announced the departure of Chris Cloete (Bath), Damian de Allende (TBC), Jake Flannery (Ulster), Matt Gallagher (Bath), Jason Jenkins (Leinster), Declan Moore (Ulster), Kevin O’Byrne (Ealing Trailfinders) and John Ryan (Wasps).

In addition, Seán French and Alex McHenry will both depart for unnamed clubs in England.

French scored one try in two games for the team.

McHenry is a product of the academy and scored one try in three Munster appearances along with featuring for Wasps on loan earlier this season.
