Ian Wright says Alexandre Lacazette is dropping too deep in Arsenal’s attack

Ian Wright believes Alexandre Lacazette is causing an issue for Arsenal by dropping too deep.

The Gunners continued their push to secure a top-four finish on Thursday evening as they left it late to seal a 2-1 win over Wolves.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s early goal following Gabriel’s mistake put Wolves in front but Nicolas Pepe scored an equaliser with eight minutes remaining.

Arsenal’s winner came in the final few seconds of injury time when Lacazette’s off-target effort deflected off Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Lacazette is set to lead the line for Arsenal for the remainder of the season following Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure to Barcelona, but Wright feels the French striker needs to avoid dropping too deep to help link up play.

‘Ben White and Gabriel, the partnership is starting to work very well, like Partey and Xhaka,’ Wright told Premier League Productions.

‘We just need a little bit more going forward. Odegaard, for me, is the glue for everything.

‘We need more goals, we definitely need more goals.

‘I’d like to see more goals from someone like Lacazette. I think some of the time he’s coming way too deep. We need a focal point because we’ve got players who can run off of him.

‘I’d like him to stay up there a little bit more, we know he has to link but stay up there a little bit more, give us someone to hit.’

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince added: ‘I think when you’re running past your own midfield players something’s not quite right.

‘We’ve seen with Ronaldo at United, if he doesn’t get the ball he gets deeper and deeper because he wants to be involved in the game, but then by doing that once you gain possession there’s nothing up top.
