Ian Evatt addresses Dapo Afolayan & Dion Charles upfront potential for Bolton Wanderers vs Ipswich Town

Ian Evatt says Bolton Wanderers are looking at the potential of starting the season with Dion Charles and Dapo Afolayan leading the line against Ipswich Town.

The pair started the final pre-season friendly against Huddersfield Town and impressed for Bolton as the Whites came from behind in a 1-1 draw. Kieran Sadlier came off the bench to cancel out Danny Ward's opener.

The duo had lined up alongside one another in the pre-season win over Watford. Afolayan himself got on the scoresheet on that occasion in a 2-0 victory.

Wanderers travel to Portman Road to take on the Tractor Boys for the curtain raiser of the new season next Saturday. Evatt now has some big choices to make for his team selection.

And after the latest pre-season showing, Evatt confirmed the Whites are looking at starting Charles and Afolayan as the front two against Ipswich. It is a partnership the Bolton boss is looking forward to seeing progress.

Evatt said: “We are looking at that. They were excellent at Watford and they have been excellent again against Huddersfield.

“It is a good combination because Dion is always on the shoulder and looking to run in behind and Dapo takes up really intelligent positions and pockets. We can play into him and through him, he can turn and create.

“It makes it more awkward a nine dropping into the 10 pocket rather than a number 10 playing there and being marked. Defenders don’t really want to follow him because they know they have Dion looking to run in behind and also two wingbacks who are really quick as well.
