'I was fit and healthy before - now I can’t even go to the bathroom without help': Man, 22, whose life changed in seconds speaks of horrendous ordeal

The victim of a horrendous motorbike crash has told how he battled to stay alive - but now faces another struggle to make ends meet.

Maciej Maik was thrown from his bike following the crash on Oldham Road in Ashton-under-Lyne last month. Today (August 15), he is still in Salford Royal Hospital, and is set to be for months — hoping to be discharged ‘by Christmas’.

During his time on the ward, Maciej, from the Holts Estate in Oldham, has had SIX operations, and lost the ability to walk.

He is hopeful that he will get his mobility back, but is resigned to never fully recovering. To make matters worse, 22-year-old Maciej has lost his job as a baker, as he’s ‘not able to work for 12 months’.

“I was fit and healthy before. Now I can’t even go to the bathroom without the assistance of other people,” said Maciej, speaking from his hospital bed nearly a month on from the July 19 smash.

“My injuries were a shattered ankle, knee, and I had a fracture on my spine. I am currently in recovery,” he added. “I have been riding bikes for a while and nothing happened. But then I nearly died.”

Maciej’s recovery has been long. He’s had six operations in total — two on his left leg, three on his right , and one on his right arm — but he has been supported by his family.

He went on: “They were scared they’d lose me. My brother and sister were on the scene within two minutes of the crash.

“Someone is here everyday, it’s either my dad or my brother or sister. They are bending over backwards to get me what I need.”
