I was a failure at Manchester United - it will always be the biggest regret of my career

Imagine filling a position that your predecessor had excelled in for 27 years.

That was the size of the challenge awaiting David Moyes when he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United in May 2013. He signed a six-year deal, officially starting work in M16 on July 1.

Ferguson recommended his fellow countryman, confident he would pick up the baton after 11 successful years along the M62 at Everton. But just one game north of a half-century in charge, Moyes was dismissed, spending less than a year in charge.

Since Moyes' exit in April 2014, four permanent managers, including current boss Erik ten Hag, have all attempted to restore United to their former glories. But because of the standards that Ferguson set across almost three decades worth of service, none of them have come close to rising to that challenge.

The last 11 years, not that it was ever a secret, have highlighted just how good a manager Ferguson was. He is the most successful British manager of all time and it is unlikely his success at United will ever be replicated.

For Moyes, however, it did not take away his level of disappointment at having failed to pick up from where Ferguson left off.

Speaking during the summer, Moyes told the Up Front with Simon Jordan podcast: "My time at Manchester United was a failure. If I've got any regrets in my career, it's taking one of the biggest jobs in world football and not being able to make it work.

"When it's my time to retire, that'll always be my biggest regret. I found it really difficult when I lost the Manchester United
