'I told him he had his whole life ahead of him...'

A quick-thinking train conductor rushed to the aid of a teenage boy after finding him in distress at a station. Paul Singh, 36, was working on a Northern train heading to Manchester's Piccadilly iwhen he spotted the 13 year-old.

"“I sat him down and talked to him to find out what was going on," he said. "“I told him my name and said I’ll stay as long as he needs, as he’s my priority. I just spoke to him and told him he had his whole life ahead of him. “I told him about the Samaritans and said he can speak to them at any point for free, get some good support and get the help he needs."

Paul sat and spoke to the boy for half an hour whilst family members and police were called. Paul handed over to a colleague so the train could continue its journey with the boy later being taken to a place of safety by British Transport Police officers.

" “I’ve got kids myself, so I just spoke to him like he’s my own child and told him about all the help that is available. I just wanted to let him know I cared and nothing else mattered at that point." he said. I left him with a colleague, got the passengers back to Manchester Piccadilly, before taking a deep breath and mulling it over.”

The following month, conductor Naheed Asif, 47, made sure a passenger got swift medical treatment when her condition deteriorated on-board a Northern service from Crewe to Manchester.

The conductor, who is trained in first aid, alerted the driver. He halted the train at Cheadle Hulme and the line was blocked while Mr Asif contacted the emergency services.
