I saw how £21m Savinho delighted Man City fans on his first appearance
As first impressions go, Savinho was up against it.
His public unveiling at Manchester City was the first the club had held since Erling Haaland was welcomed to the Etihad as one of the biggest coups in world football. Coming hours after Pep Guardiola and his team had finished their last friendly in the United States and in the middle of the Olympics, it was a hardcore support - and, oddly enough, a family of United fans in red shirts - who turned out on Sunday afternoon to welcome Savinho and women's star Vivianne Miedema to their new home.
It has been an unusual transfer window for City, with uncertainty over players who could leave and no guarantees that major strengthening will happen. Savinho should feel like a major signing given he was one of the best players in La Liga last season and is on the Brazilian national team, but a relatively small £21m initial fee and the fact that he has been signed from a fellow City Football Group club has taken some of the excitement out of his arrival.

After eight years of Guardiola at City, it is hard for any newcomer to truly offer something different. Savinho, 22, joins the club on the back of Gabriel Jesus (19), Leroy Sane and Ferran Torres (both 20), Erling Haaland and Jeremy Doku (21) and Julian Alvarez (22) as an exciting young forward intended to be a star of the future.
Each have had varying degrees of success but the path is well-trodden. It could be argued that City have moved away from the direct, fast play that Savinho offers yet Doku was the first sign last year of a swing back towards this style.
