"I know there's been interest" - Journalist raises doubt over future of Newcastle ace Howe loves

Newcastle United ace Fabian Schar is in the box seat over negotiations of a new contract as a host of clubs are interested in securing his services, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The central defender showed he is a threat in the final third of the pitch by recording an assist in the Magpies’ 2-0 win at Brentford on Saturday, but there are doubts over whether his long-term future lies at St James’ Park.

The Telegraph have revealed Schar is set to be offered a fresh contract after returning to his best form under the stewardship of head coach Eddie Howe.

It comes after Schar has entered the final months of his £47,000-per-week agreement, which is due to expire at the end of June.

Schar’s precarious contract situation has led to interest from a host of Premier League clubs and overseas outfits, according to MailOnline.

The report suggests the 30-year-old was wanted by Italian giants Napoli during the January transfer window, while AC Milan and Spanish pair Sevilla and Valencia have also set their sights on securing Schar’s signature.

Having entered the final six months of his deal at the turn of the year, the 69-cap Switzerland international is already able to sign a pre-contract agreement with suitors outside of England.

O’Rourke believes Newcastle are on the back foot after leaving negotiations over fresh terms until the final months of Schar’s deal.

As a result, the journalist feels the defender could look to secure an even more lucrative contract than his current employers would have originally expected due to an influx of interest.
