Journalists praise ‘superb’ Schar performance v Brighton
Newcastle United enjoyed a 2-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon to make it five wins out of their last six games and Fabian Schar was one of many players to impress.
The 30-year-old started alongside Dan Burn at centre-back and was resolute as the Magpies blocked eight of Brighton’s 15 shots at St James’ Park. Only four ended up hitting the target and just one crept in.
Jordan Cronin of Newcastle World gave Schar a player rating of 8/10 and called his ‘strong’ defensive performance ‘superb’. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live gave the 30-year-old a player rating of 9/10 and called him ‘excellent’.
Grey Whitebloom of 90min gave Schar a player rating of 6/10 and was critical of his defending from set pieces, but Dominic Schurr of Shields Gazette gave the Swiss international a player rating of 8/10 and said he was ‘solid at the back’.
Against Brighton, Schar played for 90 minutes, had 38 touches, scored one goal, won four aerial duels, completed 62.5% of his 24 passes, made two tackles, had three interceptions, made six clearances and was fouled once.
The 30-year-old has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal with two assists. He’s helped Newcastle win five and draw three of their last eight games, boasting three clean sheets.
