I had Man Utd boss ringing me while I finalised transfer with another club in my kitchen

Paul Ince says Sir Alex Ferguson made a late attempt to get him to stay at Manchester United - despite Inter Milan's delegation being in his kitchen.

The former England midfielder, who played a pivotal role in Ferguson's early triumphs at Old Trafford, found himself on the receiving end of Ferguson's famously volatile management style in the summer of 1995.

At 28 years old Ince was at his physical peak, but his relationship with Ferguson had deteriorated significantly. With a £7.5million offer from Inter on the table, it seemed Ince's time at United was over, until Ferguson made a surprising eleventh-hour bid to keep him.

In an interview with Ladbrokes 1-2 Free, Ince described his shock when his home phone rang and he realised Ferguson was on the line, especially since a delegation from Inter, including president Massimo Moratti, were in his kitchen waiting for him to sign his contract.

"We were just about to sign the contract when the phone rang," Ince recalled. "[My wife] picked it up and told me it was the gaffer. So I pick up the phone and ask him how he is. [Ferguson said] 'Listen, I'm in Colorado Springs on holiday, and I've been thinking, I don't want you to go now'.

"I know we've got Nicky Butt coming through, but you're only 28, you're in your peak, I don't want you to go now'. [I replied] 'Sorry, gaffer, I've got Inter Milan in my kitchen'."
