"He should have come to training sessions but he didn’t come," said Pep Guardiola in 2017.

Guardiola was referencing a young Jadon Sancho, who had decided to turn down a £30,000 per week professional contract at Manchester City, despite having agreed to it. After turning down that deal, Sancho was informed he would not travel to the United States for City's pre-season tour and he responded by truanting from training.

“We offered the huge deal in the academy, in terms of salary, he was the [best] paid player in all the academy, and we shake our hands," added a frustrated Guardiola. “Before going to the States, he decide, or his manager decides, I am not going to sign the contract. And after that, the last two or three weeks, he didn’t appear at the training sessions.

“We put a lot of efforts [to keep Sancho], like we had with Phil Foden, Brahim Diaz and other guys. To help them to grow up from here. But at the end, if they don’t want to stay, nothing to say.”

The inevitable followed - Sancho forced an exit and departed. Borussia Dortmund signed him for a fee in the region of £10m and that represented a significant outlay for a 17-year-old who hadn't made his debut in senior football, but Sancho had demonstrated significant potential.
