'I can't lie' - Coventry City contract news as exciting player commits long-term future
Coventry City have secured the services of exciting young striker Fabio Tavares on a new and improved contract.
The 21-year-old, who joined the Sky Blues as a development squad player in January 2021 for an undisclosed fee from Rochdale, broke into the first team during the second half of last season with some eye-catching cameo displays from the bench after a prolific spell in the Under-23s which saw him bag 17 goals.
Tavares has further impressed in pre-season when he has been one of the standout performers from the development group, and looks to have cemented his place in Mark Robins’ senior squad ahead of the new Championship campaign.
And with a year left on his initial two and a half year deal, City have rewarded the pacy front man with a new contract which will run until the summer of 2025.
“I’ve been waiting for a little while to get it all done and I’m buzzing, I can’t lie; I love it here and I’m happy to sign,” said the hugely popular striker, speaking to the club’s website.
“I just want to continue playing here and keep getting better and playing in front of the Sky Blue supporters. I’ve been working really hard since I came in and I’ve been biding my time and making the most of what I’ve been given. So I feel like it’s a reward for myself for what I’ve done and for what more is to come if I keep going the way I have been.”
Tavares made his Championship debut with the Sky Blues and scored his first goal at the level when he popped up with a brilliant late CBS Arena equaliser to earn City a point against Preston North End. And he now has his sights firmly set on making his first start in the Sky Blues shirt.
“I had a really good year last year, and my main aim is to kick on from that and not to dwell on it
