'I apologised' - Bruno Fernandes details chat with Erik ten Hag after Manchester United sacking

Bruno Fernandes has admitted he apologised to former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag after he was sacked last week.

Ten Hag was dismissed by United last Monday after overseeing just three victories from the club's opening nine Premier League matches this season.

United moved swiftly to appoint the Dutchman's successor, turning to Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim, who will officially take charge at Old Trafford on November 11.

Until Amorim arrives in England, Ruud van Nistelrooy is holding the fort, and he oversaw a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday, meaning he has won one and drawn one of his opening two games in caretaker charge.

United thought they were going to bag a much-needed Premier League win after Fernandes fired them ahead after 70 minutes, converting a penalty, only for Moises Caicedo to haul Chelsea level four minutes later with a brilliant strike.

Speaking to the media for the first time since Ten Hag exited the club, Fernandes revealed he apologised to the former manager after the club made the decision to dismiss him, admitting he felt as though he contributed to the decision.

"We know that Erik has gone, it is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes," Fernandes admitted, speaking to Sky Sports. "The team is not the best, the results are not the best and he is the one who pays for it.

"Whenever you see a manager go you have to take some of the blame on yourself, it is because the team is not doing so well. It is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players.
