Hythe Town boss Nick Davis sets his side a challenge after late Isthmian South East defeat at Steyning Town Community

Manager Nick Davis wants to see a 90-minute performance from Hythe after a frustrating league defeat last weekend.

The Cannons led Steyning Town Community 1-0 at half-time thanks to on-loan Maidstone midfielder Riley Court.

It was Court’s first goal for the club and the least the visitors deserved, having gone into the game buoyed by a midweek Kent Senior Cup success on penalties at Sheppey.

But they lost their way after the break and were beaten by a late Alfie Rogers double, including an 87th-minute winner.

They visit AFC Croydon this Saturday (3pm) looking for their first away win of the Isthmian South East season.

“We played really well against Sheppey on the Tuesday and we took that into the first half at Steyning,” said boss Davis.

“We played so well and we should have taken a couple more chances when we were on top.

“We just didn’t come out for the second half.

“To be honest, we could have scored again, but didn’t, and then they scored two late goals. I was gutted.

“We deserved a point but we just stopped doing all the good things we were doing in the first half and what we did against Sheppey.

“I could only see one winner at half-time but games of football are played over 90 minutes and they’re always going to have a good spell at home on their 3G pitch.

“Considering how dominant we were in the first half, I was very disappointed not to come away with anything and to concede late again, like we did at Sevenoaks.”

Weekend opponents AFC Croydon were tipped to challenge for promotion but a slow start saw manager Jermaine McGlashan, the former Gillingham winger, step down.

The Rams are above Hythe on goal difference, sitting 15th and 16th in the table on six points.
