Hull FC spine must be challenged with potential Jake Connor loss

With Jake Connor on the field, Hull FC were going okay at Wakefield. They weren't outstanding or anything daft like that, but they had enough about them to post what was then a comfortable looking 18-6 lead.

With Connor producing two try scoring passes for his wingers in first Adam Swift and then Darnell McIntosh, not to mention Swift scoring another, it was a satisfactory first half at least, and especially so given the atrocious wet weather conditions that dampened the game throughout.

Hull did enough. They defended well, albeit Wakefield at this stage didn't throw much at them, and they posted when it mattered to take the spoils at the break, coming out their own half and keeping a high completion rate thanks to the efforts of their middles and outside backs.

In truth, to be twelve points ahead at the break given that Wakefield, due to Hull's poor discipline, had the better of field position was a testament to the visitors defence and go-forward. It was some of what McIntosh said to Hull Live last week coming to fruition. The wingers did the tough yards in the early carries and Connor had the poise at the other end to make whatever territory Hull had count. It was all going to plan. What could go wrong from here?

As a whole, the second half wasn't a great watch, but Hull started a scrappy affair after the break still in the ascendency. They didn't look like scoring, but they didn't look like conceding either, and even with just a 12-point lead, it seemed that their defence would be good enough to get the job done.
