Hull FC's Brett Hodgson points out key factors in honest assessment of Wigan defeat

Brett Hodgson naturally showed his disappointment following Hull FC’s 60-0 defeat at Wigan, but he was quick to point out some reasons for his sides loss.

It doesn’t look good with two sixty point defeats sandwiched either side of a Derby win, but facts are facts. It’s almost harsh to take a few swings at Hull, who were down to their absolute bare bones at Wigan and who paid the price for it. They were severely depleted, missing around a dozen players to injuries and suspensions.

Wigan took full advantage of that. They were ruthless and showed no mercy with their blistering speed and superior power taking Hull to the cleaners.

“They were exceptional,” Hodgson said post-match. “They were hurting from their loss last week against St Helens and especially the way that happened.

“It was pretty much men against boys for the majority of the contest. We’re disappointed. Obviously there were reasons to why the performance wasn’t there but it’s still not good enough from our perspective.

“When you’re missing 12/13 of your top squad it shows. You only have to look at the squad numbers that played today. It shows the lack of depth we’ve got at the moment in experience. Having said that, it’s still not good enough for us to concede that many points.”

Given the situation, Hull had plenty of sympathy after a tough night. It’s not like the effort wasn’t there.

It was just a set of circumstances that completely went against them, and right from the off. Hull were already depleted and the last thing they needed was to lose Chris Satae early in the game.
