Huge emergency services response near Gay Village as man rescued after falling from bridge into canal

There was a huge emergency services response near Manchester's Gay Village on Saturday night (February 18) following reports of a man falling from a bridge and into the canal.

Multiple police vehicles, as well as Incident Response Units and the fire service were called to Minshull Street, in the city centre, shortly after 10pm.

Emergency services were called out to reports of a person who had 'fallen from height'. It was established the man had fallen from a bridge into the Rochdale Canal, which has recently had its water drained.

The male was lifted out of the canal to safety on a stretcher. He sustained hip and leg injuries in the fall and is being assessed by paramedics.

Pictures taken from the scene at around 10.45pm on Saturday show paramedics in attendance, with three specialist Incident Response Units at the scene and a police car also blocking off the road.

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Shortly after 10pm on Saturday 18 February, firefighters were called out to Minshull Street, Manchester where a man had fallen from a height. A fire engine from Manchester Central quickly attended the scene where a man had fallen from a bridge into a part of the canal not containing any water.

"Firefighters are working with emergency service partners to rescue to casualty who is suffering with suspected leg and hip injuries and is being assessed by North West Ambulance Service.”
