Huddersfield Town's goalscoring purple patch could not have come at a more perfect time

February 2010, September 2010, October 2011, February 2017. There’s your full list of times in the past 28 years where the Terriers have scored two or more goals in five straight league games. Now, we can add March 2022 to that list too.

Danny Ward’s brace against West Brom followed on from scoring twice against Fulham, Cardiff and Birmingham, and three times against Peterborough United.

Huddersfield Town could scarcely have found a better time to hit their stride in front of goal. Their two games this week come against two of the best defences in the division: Millwall’s record is bettered only by Nottingham Forest, Fulham – and Saturday’s opponents, Bournemouth.

That list should actually offer encouragement to Town, however. Before Friday night, you could have added West Brom to it too; add in the two goals against Fulham and the FA Cup opener against Forest, and Town have stuck five goals past three of the Championship’s best defences over the past few weeks.

That those opponents have also scored five goals in those games suggests room for improvement at the other end; but for so long one of the big criticisms of Town was their inability to break down obstinate defences.

Even in a season packed with positives, Town’s strengths were mostly at the other end of the field until recently. They have scored just 11 times in their 13 games against the rest of the division’s top ten, drawing blanks in six of those matches; for context, all of the other sides in the top ten except Forest (10 in 13) have averaged at least a goal per game against one another.
