Huddersfield Town’s Carlos Corberan assesses play-off race as Nottingham Forest and others linger

Huddersfield Town could be forgiven for looking over their shoulders following a costly week in the Championship. 

Last Friday, they led 2-0 at West Brom thanks to a Danny Ward brace before surrendering three points by conceding two late goals. In the week, Benik Afobe struck twice for Millwall to inflict a 2-0 defeat on Town – their first Championship loss in 2022.

This Saturday pitches Carlos Corberan’s side up against second-placed Bournemouth, who are just three points ahead of Huddersfield.

Like a lot of sides in the division, though, Bournemouth have games in-hand on the Terriers and that gives the table an unbalanced look.

Worryingly for Town, the scenario is that a lot of the chasing pack in the race for the play-offs also have more fixtures to play.

Nottingham Forest, for example, are eighth in the table currently and only five points behind Huddersfield with two games in-hand. In fact, only Blackburn Rovers, who sit fourth, match Town’s 38 games when it comes to sides in the top-half of the table right now.

“If I analyse the Championship, it’s clear that there are many teams that are in a similar position in terms of the points like we are achieving,” Corberan told his press conference this morning.

“Fortunately, we are one of the sides that are competing and performing well, and have enough points to be in a good position.

“One of the characteristics of this year is that we find many, many teams that are competing really well.

“That’s why the difference in the number of points is not very high between third, where we are – this is not real because we don’t have the same number of games as our opponents – and 11th or 12th.
