Huddersfield Town prospect Brodie Spencer makes admirable promise after international bow

Huddersfield Town starlet Brodie Spencer has spoken of his pride but vowed to keep a level head after earning his first senior international caps for Northern Ireland – despite being yet to turn out for his club’s first team.

The 18-year-old right-back has been a shining light for the Terriers B team this season, winning the club’s academy player of the year award on his way to being called into Ian Baraclough’s first team for their current round of Nations League games.

Spencer came off the bench to play at left-back in a goalless draw in Cyprus on Sunday before getting his first start away to Kosovo on Thursday evening, playing at right-back and setting up Shayne Lavery’s goal just before the break in a 3-2 defeat.

Speaking after making his debut against Cyprus, Spencer told the Northern Ireland media team in a Twitter video interview: “It doesn’t really feel real to be honest! The years have just been absolutely flying since I first signed for Huddersfield.

“Making my senior debut the other night, everything’s just been going so quick, and I think I just need to keep level-headed and stay focused throughout them times, and just keep working hard, stay humble, and keep trying to learn.”

He added: “Being a lad from Belfast, I think it’s every boy’s dream growing up to play for their country at any age group, so to be able to do it at senior level so early, at such a young age, is a huge huge huge achievement for me. My family and friends and everyone was absolutely buzzing for me, so I’m just very proud.
