Pipa makes classy gesture with Steve Smith donation in emotional Huddersfield Town farewell

Pipa has farewell sent a message to Huddersfield Town fans after departing for Olympiacos and made a substantial donation to a fundraiser for former Terriers player and manager Steve Smith, who is battling late-stage dementia.

The Spanish right-back last week moved to the Greek champions for an undisclosed transfer fee and has now taken to Instagram to post a message to the Town faithful, as well as sharing the link to the fundraiser.

Smith had two spells at Town as a player (1964-77 and 1979-83), as well as working in a wide variety of backroom roles including a stint as manager from 1986-87. He was diagnosed with dementia in 2013.

“Hola Terriers! I arrived at Huddersfield in September 2020 during lockdown. It was very hard for me to be away from my family for the first time but I was very fortunate to arrive at such a warm and welcoming football club whose brilliant staff helped me to settle and feel at home.

“I was really proud and excited to wear the Huddersfield shirt but it wasn’t the same without the fans in the stadium. Regrettably you didn’t witness the best of me as I was recovering from a long-term injury, but I loved playing in front of you and I felt the energy and that the Cowshed Loyal bring to the players, the atmosphere against Luton in particular was electric. The season didn’t end as we wanted but I am very proud of what we achieved and playing at Wembley was a dream I have had since childhood.
