Huddersfield Town have already proved they have what it takes to reach Wembley play-off final
Two games, home and away, and whoever scores the most goals over the two legs goes to Wembley. The play-offs are so simple when you talk about them in those terms, but so rarely prove to be as simple in reality: the form book goes out the window, adventurous teams suddenly become cagey, and the pressure of the occasion comes to tell on the players.
Not that any of that will stop us from looking for sense and meaning in what we have seen from the sides involved over the course of the league season – and if we boil things down to the simplest possible terms, there is a significant positive for Huddersfield Town fans to hold onto as they prepare for their two most nerve-wracking games of the season in hopes of qualifying for the ultimate nail-biter.
Short of a miracle for Millwall, there are just three teams Town can face in the play-off semi-finals; one of Nottingham Forest or Bournemouth will be on the other side of the draw and could only possibly be faced at Wembley. And if the league results against Sheffield United, Luton Town and Middlesbrough are anything to go by, Town have already proven themselves capable of emerging victorious against any of them over two legs.
Middlesbrough are the only one of the three to have beaten Town home or away this season, and while Carlos Corberan’s side put in one of their worst performances of the season in a 1-2 defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium in November (and then went unbeaten until March), they put in one of their best in the reverse fixture at the Riverside two weeks ago, winning 0-2 thanks to goals from Jordan Rhodes and Naby Sarr. Call it a 3-2 win over two legs.
Town have generally been stronger away from home against the division’s better sides than than they have on
