How Ralf Rangnick's six recommendations to Manchester United last summer fared this season

Ralf Rangnick did not even last a week at Manchester United following the appointment of Erik ten Hag.

The 2021/22 interim manager was expected to stay at Old Trafford and take up a consultancy role to support the new United boss in his first season at the helm. However, the Austria head coach left soon after Ten Hag's appointment was confirmed and soon after spoke to German news outlet Bild about his frustrations within the role.

Having led the recruitment operations at RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, Rangnick never got the chance to really make his mark off-the-pitch at United. The German had drafted up six high profile names for United to potentially explore, but none of those signings ever came to fruition.

"There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club," Rangnick told BILD. "But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas. That's why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig.

"Those were names that were realistic. We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Erling Haaland when they were still on the market. But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach."
