How Manchester United are treating Leny Yoro's injury as a positive

Manchester United are attempting to frame defender Leny Yoro's three-month absence through injury as a positive.

The new £59million signing fractured his metatarsal in the first half of the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in Los Angeles last week and has been ruled out until late October. Despite the setback, club sources are viewing Yoro's lay-off as an opportunity for the 18-year-old to settle into life in Manchester and familiarise himself with his new surroundings.

A United staff member said Sir Alex Ferguson used an identical approach with newly-signed players who suffered an injury. When United manager Erik ten Hag was asked about Yoro's absence, he said: "Yeah, I'm waiting for this question, of course.

"But that's part of football, that's part of top football especially, that you come into, you go to the edge, every player has to go to the edge and yeah, then injuries are not avoidable.

"But of course, we have to be ready as a club and as a team to cover this and the players are dealing very well with this setback. They (Yoro and Rasmus Hojlund) are very positive, they are already recovering and they will return."

Yoro's absence for the first months of the season is not expected to alter United's recruitment plans. United submitted two bids for fellow centre back Jarrad Branthwaite and verbally agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt before they gazumped Real Madrid to buy Yoro.

"No, no. This will not change anything," Ten Hag clarified. "We have a plan and we stick to the plan. No (it won't change who stays), no. We have a plan and we will execute the plan, how we have that in our minds.
