How Man United played a role in England manager hunt as Thomas Tuchel breaks silence on interest

The football world waited for a decision on Erik ten Hag's future to be made but nothing came.

The Manchester Evening News revealed last Friday that Ten Hag expected to be United boss for their next game against Brentford and that is now all but confirmed, despite club chiefs discussing the Dutchman's future last week.

Thomas Tuchel was named as England boss on Wednesday morning, removing a potential Ten Hag replacement from United's shortlist.

Tuchel was the big story of the day but United also played their part. Here's a look at the latest United headlines.

Thomas Tuchel declined to comment and provided a coy answer when asked why he chose to become England manager instead of potentially joining United.

Tuchel met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the summer to discuss the possibility of replacing Erik ten Hag and continued to be a coach of interest to Ineos as the new season kicked off.

However, Tuchel signed an 18-month contract with England on the day Ratcliffe met with the United board in London last week. Ten Hag's future was discussed in that meeting but the Dutchman has survived the international break and will manage United this weekend.
