How Coventry City’s average attendance this season compare to recent seasons

What a season it has been for Coventry City, who may have fallen short of the play-offs but can take so many positives from the 2021/22 campaign.

Promoted in 2019/20, the Sky Blues’ focus last season was to avoid relegation but this term they’ve been battling much higher up the table.

Mark Robins’ side are on course for their first top-half Championship finish since 2005/06 and to make things even better they’ve been able to do so in their own ground.

Coventry returned to the Coventry Building Society Arena at the start of the season having signed a 10-year deal after a few seasons ground-sharing with Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.

That move combined with the end of restrictions on fans attending matches has meant a significant increase in home support in comparison to previous years.

According to Transfermarkt, the average attendance at the Coventry Building Society Arena in the Championship has been 19,346 – with more than 420,000 supporters attending matches at the ground in 2021/22.

That puts the Sky Blues eighth in the division in terms of average attendances this season – with Birmingham City, Stoke City, Middlesbrough, West Bromwich Albion, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, and Sheffield United above them.

Coventry’s average home attendance this season is the highest since the 2006/07 Championship campaign (20,342) and a significant increase on recent years.

In 2020/21, no fans were able to attend games while the low average in 2019/20 (6,677) is understandable given games were being played at St Andrew’s.

But this season’s average is nearly 7,000 higher than their last full season at the Coventry Building Society Arena (12,363 in 2018/19) and more than double the average attendance in four of the five seasons
