Details emerge of Watford managerial choice involving Millwall

According to Football Insider, the Hornets considered the 48-year old as a potential replacement for Roy Hodgson as manager of the club.

Rowett led the Lions to a 9th place finish in the Championship this season, falling just six points short of reaching a play-off place.

Watford were reportedly looking for an expert in the second division, which Rowett ticks the boxes of, having been in charge of Millwall, Derby County, Birmingham City and Stoke City in this tier of English football.

However, it has now emerged that the club’s hierarchy have opted to move instead for Forest Green Rovers boss Rob Edwards.

John Eustace was also considered for the role, before attention turned to the 39-year old.

Watford had their relegation from the Premier League confirmed earlier this month after only one season back in the top flight.

Managerial stints under Xisco, Claudio Ranieri and Hodgson proved fruitless as the team looked destined for the drop over the last few months of the campaign.

Rowett has certainly got the Championship experience that any side in the division would desire in a manager.

It remains to be seen whether Rowett would have left Millwall for the role, but that would have come as a disappointment for Lions fans if he had.

Rowett has done quite well since taking over the London club in 2019 and almost led the team to a top six finish this campaign.

The decision to go for Edwards instead is a bold move, but the former centre-back has excelled with the side, earning promotion to League One this season in impressive fashion.

If his appointment proves unsuccessful then perhaps this is a sign that Rowett would again be considered should the club look for yet another new manager.
