Horror Stuart Armstrong injury 'doesn't look good' as Southampton and Scotland star leaves stadium on crutches

Stuart Armstrong is on crutches and set to miss the rest of the season in another potential blow to Steve Clarke's plans for the summer.

Experienced midfielder Armstrong has enjoyed a good season for promotion-chasing Saints in the Championship, having been one of Russell Martin's key men. He's started just twice for Scotland since 2022 but is normally one of Clarke's first picks, and would have been a certainty for the June friendlies and then the plane to Germany.

But after the news that Lewis Ferguson's injury could rule him out of the squad, Armstrong's spot is now at serious risk too. The former Celtic and Dundee United man went down against Cardiff City with what looked like a horror knee injury in stoppage time and required a stretcher to get him off the pitch. There was real worry about his condition and speaking after the game, boss Martin confirmed he will miss their final three games of the season.

He left the stadium on crutches and is also set to miss the playoffs in the likely event that Southampton need them. Exact details of the injury are not yet clear with Martin only saying it 'doesn't look good.' There have been suggestions of a serious ACL injury, in which case Armstrong would all but certainly miss the Euros.
