Horan header earns USA a point against Netherlands

Lindsey Horan's second-half goal helped the USA rally from a rare losing position to draw 1-1 with the Netherlands in a rematch of the 2019 final at the Women's World Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.

Horan's goal came in the 62nd minute after Jill Roord had scored in the 17th for the Dutch.

Both teams now have four points in Group E and are well placed to to advance to the Round of 16, but the US top the group due to their +3 goal difference, two goals more than the Dutch.

On Tuesday, in the final group matches, the US face Portugal in Auckland at the same time as the Netherlands and Vietnam meet in Dunedin. Portugal and Vietnam play each other looking for their first points this morning.

Horan got the equaliser moments after a lengthy and heated exchange with Danielle van de Donk, her teammate with French club Lyon, who had made a late challenge.

Once tempers settled, Horan headed a corner kick by half-time substitute Rose Lavelle for her 29th international goal.

The Americans had 11 corners compared to one for the Dutch but Roord scored a milestone goal to put her team ahead, marking the first time the three-in-a-row chasing US had trailed at the World Cup in 18 games, since the July 2011 quarterfinals against Brazil.

Victoria Pelova sent a pass to Roord, who took a touch before hammering a shot from 17 yards for her 22nd international goal.

It was the only shot on goal in five attempts in the match for the Dutch. The US had 18 shots, four on target.

This was the first time that the finalists from the previous tournament met in the group stage of the following Women's World Cup.
