CALIFORNIA, USA: The United States only wanted to get through their final World Cup group stage match Thursday night without an injury or a red card, while Turkiye were playing for a face-saving victory to end a dismal tournament. Both teams got what they wanted most out of their meaningless meeting before the Americans head on to the knockout stage — and coach Mauricio Pochettino was annoyed by any suggestion that the Americans’ last-gasp, 3-2 defeat said anything negative about the state of his team. Kaan Ayhan scored on the final kick of the match to send Turkiye past the US in the eighth minute of stoppage time for their only win of the World Cup. The result was meaningless to the Americans, who will meet Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on Wednesday. Pochettino sent out nine new starters, including eight who were starting a World Cup match for the first time. The US tied it early in the second half on a goal by Sebastian Berhalter, and the Americans got within a few seconds of an unbeaten run through the group stage. But in his postgame news conference, Pochettino expressed his annoyance with what he perceived as disappointment in the result. “For you not say congratulations that we won the group, that is a little bit sad,” Pochettino told reporters. “What we need to remember is we won first place in this group,” Pochettino added while speaking in Spanish and English.

WASHINGTON: After years of buildup and months of conjecture, the 26-man United States roster for this summer’s home World Cup was unveiled Tuesday on Fox at an event in New York. As expected, the roster put together by announced by manager Mauricio Pochettino is anchored by a number of longtime American standouts playing in Europe in AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic, Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams and Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie. There were plenty of uncertainties, though, about the roster heading into Tuesday’s announcement. Most notably, 23-year-old midfielder Gio Reyna has made the roster for his second World Cup despite not making a start for the USMNT since last December. That inclusion likely came over Lyon midfielder Tanner Tessmann, who was left off the roster even though he’s expected to recover from the muscle strain he’s been sidelined by before the World Cup begins next month. Another somewhat surprising roster addition was 28-year-old midfielder Alejandro Zendejas, who likely beat out Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna for the spot. The United States squad ranks 16th in the current FIFA/Coca Cola World Ranking.

The United States is the sole bidder for the 2031 Women's World Cup, and the United Kingdom is set to host the 2035 tournament, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced on Thursday. Speaking at the UEFA Congress in Belgrade, Infantino said the only bid for 2031 was "from the USA and potentially some other CONCACAF members together, and 2035 is from Europe, from the home nations." Infantino also said FIFA planned to increase the number of participating teams at the Women's World Cup from 32 teams to 48 in time for the 2031 tournament.
The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) said Wednesday it will press ahead with a joint bid for the 2031 Women's World Cup after a FIFA decision boosted the CONCACAF region's chances of staging the tournament. The USSF said in a brief statement on social media that it planned to "complete the bid process to host the 2031 FIFA Women's World Cup" in partnership with the CONCACAF regional federation and its members. "We are excited by the opportunity to welcome teams and fans, inspire the next generation and grow the game regionally and globally," the US federation said.
