Homes evacuated after explosives found at property in Ely, Cardiff - live updates

Part of a road in Cardiff was cordoned off as police were called to reports of explosives at a property. South Wales Police confirmed they were called to the scene on Drope Road in the Michaelston-Super-Ely area of the city.

According to the force, a safety cordon was put in place while their investigation continued. Local residents were advised to stay indoors and to keep away from windows while the matter is being dealt with.

Residents of the street told WalesOnline they had been evacuated from their houses while the suspected explosives were dealt with. A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "We are dealing with ordnance which has been discovered at a property on Drope Road in the Michaelston-Super-Ely area of Cardiff. A safety cordon has been put in place while investigations continue. Local residents are advised to stay indoors and keep away from windows while the matter is being dealt with."

Specialist EOD officers were deployed to deal with the ordnance and to make it safe. In a second statement issued this afternoon, South Wales Police confirmed that specialist EOD officers have made the ordnance safe and all cordons have been lifted. They added: "We'd like to thank local residents for their understanding while the matter was dealt with."
