Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill still in the works, says director

A Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill is still in the works, director Chad Stahelski has confirmed.

The original film starring Christopher Lambert debuted some 36 years ago and spawned a franchise including three more movies, two live-action TV shows and original novels. The fantasy film centres around Scottish swordsman Connor Macleod, an immortal who must fight off his opponent immortals to win a fabled prize.

It's thought a remake of the 1986 Highlander film has been under development since since 2008, with John Wick director Stahelski joining the team in 2016. But any progress went quiet, with some fans no doubt assuming the reboot had been scrapped.

However, Stahelski offered an update on the Happy Sad Confused podcast this week, telling host Josh Horowitz that the reboot is on its way. Stahelski explained: "I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline 'there can only be one,' you can’t just kill everybody the first time.

"I’ll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that, but we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property."

He added that the team has 'ideas for days' with big plans to turn the reboot into its own TV show. “Highlander, I can tell you right now… if we got our s*** together and we pull off the feature, we have ideas for days about how to make the coolest characters and to make that an epic TV show," he said.
