Henrik Larsson in Celtic pomp today would fetch third highest transfer fee in football history
Former Celtic boss Martin O'Neill is utterly convinced Henrik Larsson would have earned a £150m transfer fee if he was playing in today's cash-rich game.
The Super Swede is Parkhead royalty but is also revered across the globe for his exploits with his national team and Barcelona during a goal-laden career which was best remembered for seven glorious seasons in green and white before leaving as a free transfer in the summer of 2004. And the Irishman – who managed Larsson for five seasons at Celtic – is under no doubt the King of Kings would have commanded a fee to rank him among the highest in world football. It comes amid a madcap summer where two defensive midfielders in Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice have joined Chelsea and Arsenal respectively in deals in excess of £100m.
Speaking to BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds, O'Neill said: “I was delighted when Henrik proved his worth at Barcelona - winning the Champions League. Let's say he was 26 or 27 years old and in his prime, if Arsenal have just paid £105million on Declan Rice, when it comes to a prolific goalscorer like Henrik we've got to be talking about him being worth around £150million.”
Larsson netted an incredible 242 goals in 315 appearances with Celtic before leaving Glasgow and becoming a Barca hero. He was beloved during his two years in Catalonia which resulted in him providing two assists in the Champions League final to see off Arsenal in Paris 2006.
