'Helped me a lot' - Ederson reveals hidden training tactic which helps Man City focus

Ederson has admitted he adds cognitive work to his Manchester City regime to help stay focused during games.

It is a compliment to Pep Guardiola’s team that the goalkeeper is rarely called into action. Last season, Ederson faced just 46 shots on goal in the Premier League - ranking him 20th in the division for shots faced.

Going several phases in a game without any involvement requires an added level of concentration, making the Brazilian’s role somewhat specialist in the goalkeeping trade. Ederson has now revealed the preparation he undergoes at the training ground to help him remain attentive for the entire 90 minutes.

“Staying focused all the time is very difficult,” he said to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporto. “I’ve experienced that at City. I’ve added cognitive work that helps work my brain. This is work that I’ve brought into my career and my professional life that has helped me a lot.

“At the start of City, I ended up using my feet a lot more than my hands because of the way we played, which was a surprise for the opposition. A style of football they weren’t used to. Now, the level has changed completely, the teams practise our way of playing a lot more.”

Ederson also insisted he is happy to have been nominated for this year’s The Best FIFA Goalkeeper award. A treble-winning season in 2022-23 places the 30-year-old - who finished third in 2017 - among the favourites, where he will compete with Yassine Bounou, Andre Onana and Thibaut Courtois.
