Hello Kitty fans distraught to learn character isn't actually a cat

People are just discovering that Hello Kitty is not actually a kitty, leaving them stunned by the true nature of the popular character.

A video confirming the character is not a cat has since swept across X, formerly known as Twitter, shocking the public with its revelation. However, some were less than thrilled with the news and refuse to accept that Hello Kitty is not a cat.

In an interview on the Today show, a clip featured Jill Cook, the director of retail business development at Sanrio, the company behind Hello Kitty, confirming it's not a cat but a little girl. Fans were not happy with this revelation.

She stated: "So Hello Kitty is not a cat, she's actually a little girl. Born and raised in the suburbs of London, she has a mum and dad and a twin sister Mimmy who's also her best friend. She enjoys baking cookies and making new friends."

Further details were provided by executive Cook, who disclosed that Hello Kitty is no taller than a few apples. "She weighs three apples and she's five apples tall," Jill added. But the public is less than pleased with this revelation.

One user posted: "Yeah no. How is that not a cat?" Another commented: "So instead of a cat it's some mutant hybrid that weights nothing?" A third questioned: "So not a cat, but has whiskers and cat like ears?"

Following Hello Kitty creator Yuko Shimizu's recent interview on BBC Witness History, they revealed: "When [she] was first designed, it was printed on a small purse - a small purse released on sale along with six other different characters. However, as Hello Kitty far outsold the others, the company decided to focus on developing it further, and it was then that the character was given a name."
